ILLINOIS PUBLIC SAFETY LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

Rather than placing correctional supervisors into broad, one-size-fits-all leadership training, the Illinois Public Safety Leadership Institute – Corrections was intentionally designed around the realities, responsibilities, and challenges faced by those currently leading people in correctional environments.

About the Corrections Series

Preparing Today’s Corrections Supervisors for Tomorrow’s Leadership Challenges

The strength of a correctional organization depends heavily on the effectiveness of the supervisors who lead its people every day.

The Corrections Supervisory Challenge

Correctional supervisors occupy one of the most important positions within any correctional organization.

They are responsible for translating organizational expectations into daily performance. They set the tone for their shifts, units, and teams while balancing operational demands, employee needs, accountability, safety, security, and organizational priorities.

Today’s correctional supervisors are increasingly expected to:

  • Lead employees with varying levels of experience

  • Address performance and accountability concerns

  • Manage conflict among personnel

  • Communicate difficult decisions and organizational expectations

  • Develop and mentor employees

  • Maintain morale during staffing and operational challenges

  • Navigate generational differences within the workforce

  • Reinforce professionalism and ethical conduct

  • Make sound decisions in high-pressure environments

  • Build effective and cohesive teams

  • Positively influence organizational culture

  • Prepare employees for future leadership responsibilities

These responsibilities require more than technical expertise or operational experience. They require strong leadership skills.

The IPSLI Corrections Leadership Series

The Illinois Public Safety Leadership Institute Corrections Leadership Series was created to strengthen the leadership capabilities of those currently serving in supervisory and management roles within correctional organizations.

This two-year leadership development program consists of one week of training each year and provides correctional supervisors with practical tools, contemporary leadership strategies, and opportunities to examine the real-world challenges they face every day.

Rather than focusing solely on policy, procedure, or technical correctional operations, the program concentrates on the human side of supervision and leadership—leading employees, managing performance, creating accountability, strengthening teams, addressing conflict, and building healthy organizational cultures.

Strengthening the Supervisory Level

First-line and mid-level supervisors have tremendous influence over an organization. For many employees, their immediate supervisor represents the organization itself. The quality of that supervisory relationship can influence:

  • Employee morale

  • Job satisfaction

  • Performance

  • Accountability

  • Professional development

  • Workplace culture

  • Communication

  • Retention

  • Organizational trust

  • Employee willingness to assume greater responsibility

Investing in correctional supervisors therefore has an impact far beyond the individual participant.

Stronger supervisors create stronger employees, stronger teams, and stronger organizations.

Learning Across Correctional Organizations

A unique strength of the IPSLI Corrections Leadership Series is the opportunity for supervisors from different correctional environments to learn together. Participants may represent county jails, detention centers, sheriff’s offices, state correctional institutions, juvenile facilities, and other custody-focused organizations. While their facilities and operational responsibilities may differ, supervisors frequently confront many of the same leadership challenges. Bringing correctional supervisors together allows participants to:

  • Compare approaches to common leadership challenges

  • Learn from the experiences of supervisors outside their own organization

  • Identify effective leadership practices

  • Expand their professional perspectives

  • Build relationships with correctional leaders throughout Illinois

  • Develop a professional network that continues beyond the classroom

Strong Supervisors Build Strong Organizations

The future of corrections depends not only on recruiting and retaining quality personnel, but on developing the supervisors who lead them.

Investing in today’s correctional supervisors strengthens today’s workforce while preparing the next generation of correctional leaders.
